From a pork-lover’s paradise to a tongue-searing Szechuan spot, here are our top picks for great chow at affordable prices.
Carnitas’ Snack Shack
Porcine pleasures abound at Carnitas’ Snack Shack, so named for the pet pig owned by celebrated chef Hanis Cavin and his wife/co-proprietor, Sara Stroud. Try the towering “Triple Threat” sandwich of breaded pork schnitzel, applewood-smoked bacon, and slow-roasted pork on a brioche bun with tangy aioli. Informal but gourmet, Carnitas’ requires guests to order at a sidewalk window, and then sends them around back to dine on the patio. The menu, priced mostly under $10, changes daily but usually offers a plush BLT, overflowing carnitas tacos spread with guacamole, and a rich mac ’n’ cheese with bacon. The bacon ice cream sandwiches claim quite a following. 2632 University Avenue, San Diego; 1-619-294-7675.
