Burgers are a big part of the San Diego food scene, and whether you like yours cheap and cheerful or complicated with cheffy toppings, there are too many options to count. Despite reviewing local burgers for over three years, I’m in no danger of running out of options. There are always new places to cover, along with a smattering of old stand-bys I have yet to hit. So, while I haven’t sampled every burger in San Diego, I have struck gold multiple times over.
Paring down the many contenders to a comprehensive list of the ten best was more emotional than you might think. I scrutinized the selections, agonizing over which burgers should make the cut, and revising the list several times until I got it just right.
My final picks are representative of the San Diego burger scene as a whole, and cover everything from longtime favorites like the bacon cheeseburger at Hodad’s, to the beautifully complicated burger at Davanti Enoteca.

The Shack Burger ($9) features a crusty, charred beef patty smeared with bacon jam and aioli and draped with melted white cheddar. It’s decadent and full-flavor, but even if you make happy snorting sounds while eating it, you still won’t be the biggest pig at the restaurant (that honor goes to the giant porker perched on the roof).
